Nares

Definisi

The external nostrils on a bird's bill, sometimes covered by a fleshy cere in raptors and parrots.

Penjelasan Rinci

Bird nares are adapted to diet and environment. Tubenoses (petrels, albatrosses) have prominent tubular nares that help expel excess salt and may enhance olfactory navigation over featureless oceans. In cormorants and some diving birds the nares are vestigial, forcing mouth-breathing. The cere — a fleshy, bare patch covering the base of the upper mandible and nares in raptors and parrots — is often brightly colored and signals health status to potential mates.
