Field Identification

Field Mark

Definisi

A distinctive visual feature such as a wing bar or eye stripe used to identify a species in the field.

Penjelasan Rinci

Field marks fall into categories: structural (bill shape, wing length, tail shape), topographic (supercilium, wing bar, rump patch), behavioral (tail-wagging, feeding posture), and vocal. Learning a systematic approach to field marks — moving from overall size and shape to head pattern, wing pattern, and underparts — improves identification accuracy. In the age of digital photography, secondary features visible only in images (underwing pattern, primary projection) are increasingly documented by field observers.
