Clutch size varies from one egg in species like albatrosses and penguins (K-selected life histories) to 18-20 in some ducks and pheasants (r-selected). Lack's (1947) hypothesis proposed that clutch size evolves to match the maximum number of young parents can successfully raise. Experimental manipulations adding eggs to clutches typically reduce fledgling quality, supporting this hypothesis. Supplementary feeding during the nestling period can increase the number of young fledged from experimental enlarged clutches.
