About These Birds
Magenta Petrel
38–42 cm. Large dark-rumped petrel; brown above with pale forehead and whitish underparts. Critically Endangered; rediscovered in 1978 on Chatham Islands. Fewer than 150 known pairs; threatened by introduced predators and road lighting. Feeds on squid and fish at sea.
Balearic Shearwater
30–38 cm. Brown above; variably dirty-white to brown below; often shows brown smudging on flanks. Breeds only Balearic Islands, Spain. Critically Endangered with fewer than 3,000 pairs; faces extinction. Migrates to NE Atlantic; threatened by predators, fishing bycatch, and tourist development.
