Rough-faced Shag
65–70 cm. Black above; white below; prominent orange-red facial caruncles. Endemic to Cook Strait area, New Zealand. Vulnerable; small fragmented population. Feeds on fish and invertebrates in coastal waters. Colonial nester on cliff ledges; distinct from other New Zealand shags.
Bounty Islands Shag
60–65 cm. Black and white pied shag; orange facial caruncles; pink feet. Endemic to Bounty Islands, New Zealand subantarctic. Vulnerable; total population fewer than 600 birds on remote barren islets. Feeds on fish in cold surrounding waters; does not disperse far from breeding islands.
