About These Birds

African Snipe

African Snipe: 25–28 cm, medium-large snipe resident in high-altitude wetlands, bogs, and marshy grassland of eastern and southern Africa from Ethiopia and Sudan to the Cape. Cryptic brown-and-buff streaking. Probes soft mud for invertebrates. Sedentary. Performs display 'drumming' flights with spread tail in breeding season.

Hudsonian Godwit

Hudsonian Godwit: 36–42 cm, North American godwit with a black tail, white rump, and dark underwing. Breeds on subarctic wetlands of Alaska and northern Canada; migrates via Great Plains staging areas to winter on South American coasts and pampas. Long-distance migrant. Feeds on invertebrates. Population concentrated at few key staging sites.
