New Caledonian Storm-petrel
New Caledonian Storm-petrel, 18–20 cm, is an extremely poorly known species recorded only from around New Caledonia in the southwest Pacific. Until recently unconfirmed as a breeding species; a small colony was found in 2021. Morphology similar to Black-bellied Storm-petrel; conservation status under review.
Black-bellied Storm-petrel
Black-bellied Storm-petrel, 19–21 cm, breeds on sub-Antarctic islands and disperses widely across the Southern Ocean. Dark above with white rump; distinctive black streak through the white belly. Patters over wave surfaces picking up plankton. Long-distance pelagic movements after breeding.
