About These Birds

Puna Plover

Puna Plover: 16–18 cm, small Andean plover with double black breast-bands and a rufous crown-patch. Resident on the puna (high Andean plateau) of Peru, Bolivia, and northern Argentina near saline lakes and stony shores at 3,500–5,000 m. Insectivorous. Sedentary high-altitude specialist. Often encountered in pairs.

Spot-breasted Lapwing: 28–30 cm, Ethiopian highland endemic lapwing with a black head and breast spotted white, and red legs. Restricted to high-altitude moorland and montane grassland above 1,800 m in Ethiopia. Insectivorous. Sedentary; rare and little-studied. Declining due to overgrazing and agricultural encroachment.
