Sandy-brown above with dark streaking; bold supercilium; large yellow eye; white and dark wing panel in flight. Inhabits dry open habitat: chalk downs, steppe, heathland, and shingle beaches. Migratory; winters in Africa. Crepuscular.

Inhabits open riverbanks, sandy shores, and open scrubby land often near water. Common along major African rivers including the Niger and Nile.
