About These Birds
Flesh-footed Shearwater
41–45 cm, wingspan 99–107 cm. All-dark sooty-brown with pale flesh-coloured feet and yellowish bill base. Breeds southern Indian Ocean islands and SW Australia; ranges to North Pacific. Near Threatened; bycatch concern. Feeds on fish and squid; follows fishing vessels.
Chatham Islands Petrel
30 cm. Small; dark grey above with white forehead and underparts; distinctive black axillaries. Critically Endangered; breeds only South East Island, Chatham Islands (few hundred pairs). Threatened by weka predation; intensive management sustains population. Ranges in temperate Pacific.
