Start with four basic field marks: size (compared to a sparrow, robin, or crow), overall shape (silhouette, tail length, bill shape), primary color and any distinctive patterns (streaks, bars, patches), and behavior (feeding on the ground, diving, hovering, flocking). Then note the habitat — a bird in a marsh is rarely the same species as one in a pine forest.
