Ecology

Niche

परिभाषा

The ecological role and specific set of environmental conditions a bird species occupies within its habitat.

विस्तृत व्याख्या

A bird's ecological niche includes its habitat preferences, food sources, foraging methods, breeding season, and tolerance of environmental variables like temperature and humidity. Niche theory predicts that coexisting species with similar niches compete, leading to character displacement or competitive exclusion. Many species pairs (e.g., Great Tit and Blue Tit) partition resources by foraging at different heights or microhabitat types, reducing direct competition and enabling coexistence.
