परिभाषा
Seasonal movement up and down mountains rather than across latitudes, common in montane species.
विस्तृत व्याख्या
Altitudinal migration is structurally similar to latitudinal migration but involves much shorter distances (sometimes only a few hundred meters of elevation change). It is common in mountain birds such as ptarmigan, Clark's Nutcrackers, and many Himalayan species. The mechanism is driven by the same photoperiodic and hormonal cues as long-distance migration. Some populations of the same species are altitudinal migrants while nearby populations are year-round residents, illustrating the flexibility of migratory behavior.
