About These Birds
Beck's Petrel
29 cm. Small; dark brown above and on breast; white belly. Critically Endangered; known from only two specimens collected 1928–1929 in the Solomon Islands and Bismarck Sea. No confirmed breeding site. Possibly nests on remote Pacific islands; one of the world's least-known birds.
Antarctic Petrel
40–46 cm, wingspan 100–110 cm. Striking chocolate-brown and white pattern; only member of its genus. Breeds solely in Antarctica on cliff ledges; among the most southerly-nesting birds. Feeds on fish and krill beneath pack ice. Returns to colonies in October; one of the most abundant Antarctic seabirds.
