About These Birds

Little Cormorant

50–55 cm. Small; all dark glossy black; orange facial skin; short crest in breeding. Widespread across South and Southeast Asia in freshwater lakes, rivers, and estuaries. Feeds on small fish. Commonly seen perched with wings outstretched drying plumage.

Bank Cormorant

76 cm. Dark sooty-brown; bare-faced; yellow at gape. Endemic to South Africa and Namibia coast; Near Threatened. Breeds on rocky islands and coastal cliffs. Feeds on fish in the cold Benguela upwelling. Does not venture far from breeding colonies; very restricted coastal range.
