About These Birds
Leach's Storm-petrel
Leach's Storm-petrel, 19–22 cm, is one of the most numerous pelagic seabirds, with millions breeding in burrows in North Atlantic and North Pacific islands. Dark brown with white rump; erratic, butterfly-like flight unique among storm-petrels. Nocturnal at colonies; planktivore. Long-distance transequatorial migrant.
European Storm-petrel
European Storm-petrel, 14–18 cm, wingspan 36–39 cm, is the smallest seabird in European waters, breeding in burrows and rock crevices on Atlantic islands from Iceland to the Mediterranean. Entirely sooty black with white rump. Strictly nocturnal at colonies. Planktivore; patters over wave surface picking up oil and plankton.
