About These Birds
Band-rumped Storm-petrel
Band-rumped Storm-petrel, 19–21 cm, breeds on Atlantic and Pacific volcanic islands including the Azores, Canaries, and Galápagos. Sooty brown with a white rump band; similar to Leach's but straighter wingtips and steadier flight. Multiple cryptic species may be involved. Planktivore; widespread pelagic.
Townsend's Storm-petrel
Townsend's Storm-petrel, 19–21 cm, breeds on Guadalupe and San Benedicto Islands off western Mexico. Recently split from Leach's Storm-petrel. Forked white rump, dark overall. Pelagic in eastern Pacific; planktivore. Conservation status uncertain; threatened by introduced predators at small nesting island colonies.
