About These Birds
Northern Bald Ibis
70–80 cm. Metallic black plumage; bare red face; long downcurved red bill; shaggy neck ruff. Critically Endangered; fewer than 1,000 birds; breeds in Morocco, Turkey (reintroduced), and parts of Middle East. Migratory; winters in Ethiopia. Ancient cultural significance; once widespread in Europe.
African Sacred Ibis
65–89 cm. White with bare black head and neck; black wingtips; red underwing stripe. Widespread sub-Saharan Africa, Nile Delta, and naturalised in southern Europe and elsewhere. Feeds by probing in wetlands and grasslands for invertebrates. Colonial breeder; associated with ancient Egyptian mythology.
