About These Birds

African Snipe

African Snipe: 25–28 cm, medium-large snipe resident in high-altitude wetlands, bogs, and marshy grassland of eastern and southern Africa from Ethiopia and Sudan to the Cape. Cryptic brown-and-buff streaking. Probes soft mud for invertebrates. Sedentary. Performs display 'drumming' flights with spread tail in breeding season.

Greater Yellowlegs

Greater Yellowlegs: 29–33 cm, large North American shank with yellow legs, slightly upturned bill, and loud ringing call. Breeds on boreal muskeg from Alaska to Newfoundland; winters on wetlands throughout the Americas south to Patagonia. Feeds by wading and sweeping bill through water. More robust than Lesser Yellowlegs. Long-distance migrant.
