About These Birds
African Snipe
African Snipe: 25–28 cm, medium-large snipe resident in high-altitude wetlands, bogs, and marshy grassland of eastern and southern Africa from Ethiopia and Sudan to the Cape. Cryptic brown-and-buff streaking. Probes soft mud for invertebrates. Sedentary. Performs display 'drumming' flights with spread tail in breeding season.
Tahiti Sandpiper
Tahiti Sandpiper: 18–20 cm, extinct sandpiper once endemic to Tahiti, French Polynesia. Known from a few 18th-century specimens collected during Cook's voyages. Pale with white wing-patches. Extinct by the mid-19th century; likely eliminated by rats and cats introduced with European contact. EX.
