A medium-small Phasianidae francolin (~330 g) of open grassland, scrub, and cultivated areas in southern China and Indochina. Males are boldly patterned black-and-white with chestnut wings. Loud, far-carrying calls are characteristic at dawn. Feeds on seeds, insects, and plant matter. Least Concern; tolerates disturbed habitats.
