About These Birds

Wilson's Plover

Wilson's Plover: 17–20 cm, stocky Americas plover with a very thick black bill adapted for catching fiddler crabs, and a single broad breast-band. Resident on sandy beaches and tidal mudflats of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of North America, Caribbean, and Pacific coast of Central and South America. Largely sedentary. Crab specialist.

Southern Lapwing

Southern Lapwing: 32–38 cm, the most familiar South American lapwing with a grey head, pinkish-grey upperparts, metallic green wing spurs, and a distinctive crest. Common resident from Colombia south to Patagonia in open grassland, farmland, and urban parks. Insectivorous. Highly vocal and territorial. Expanding its range northward.
