About These Birds

Small Saint Helena Petrel

Extinct; known only from subfossil bones from St. Helena Island. Smaller than Bulwer's Petrel; went extinct shortly after human settlement of St. Helena, likely from introduced predators. Part of the endemic St. Helena seabird community that was largely extirpated by human arrival.

Antarctic Prion

25–28 cm, wingspan 58–66 cm. Classic prion pattern: pale blue-grey, white below, bold dark M across upperwing. Medium-broad bill. Most abundant and widespread prion; breeds South Georgia, Heard, Kerguelen, Macquarie. Feeds on crustaceans; makes deep dives compared to congeners.
