About These Birds

African Openbill

72–90 cm. All-black plumage with gloss; distinctive large bill with a gap between mandibles adapted for extracting apple snails. Resident across sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar in wetlands, rivers, and rice paddies. Feeds almost exclusively on molluscs. Colonial breeder in trees near water.

Black Stork

95–100 cm, wingspan 173–185 cm. Iridescent black with white underparts; red bill and legs. Breeds across temperate Eurasia from Iberia to eastern China; migrates to sub-Saharan Africa and India. Solitary and shy; nests on cliff ledges or large trees. Feeds on fish in clear streams.
