About These Birds

Wrybill

Wrybill: 20–22 cm, unique New Zealand plover whose bill curves distinctly to the right—the only bird with a laterally deflected bill. Uses this adaptation to extract invertebrates from under riverbed stones. Breeds on braided riverbeds of Canterbury, South Island; winters on tidal mudflats of North Island harbours. NT.

Saint Helena Plover

Saint Helena Plover: 15–16 cm, critically endangered plover endemic to Saint Helena island in the South Atlantic. Locally called 'wirebird' for its thin legs. Restricted to open semi-arid flax-and-pasture plateau of central Saint Helena. Insectivorous. Fewer than 350 individuals. CR. Threatened by cats, habitat change, and drought.
