Zigzag Heron

The Zigzag Heron (Zebrilus undulatus) is one of the smallest and most enigmatic members of the family Ardeidae, found in tropical South America. It is the sole member of its genus and is among the least-known herons in the world due to its secretive habits and specialized habitat. Adults are intricately patterned with irregular zigzag lines and vermiculations of dark brown, rufous, and buff across the entire plumage — a cryptic pattern that provides near-perfect camouflage in its humid forest environment. Total length is only 28–33 cm, making it one of the smallest herons, comparable in size to the smallest bitterns.

The Zigzag Heron inhabits the interior of dense lowland tropical rainforest, strongly associated with the margins of small, slow-moving forest streams and other shaded water bodies within continuous forest. Its range encompasses the Amazon basin and adjacent river systems, including parts of Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname, and Venezuela. It is associated with intact primary rainforest and is rarely if ever found in significantly disturbed or deforested areas.

Behavior and ecology are poorly known. The species is assumed to be crepuscular or nocturnal in foraging, consistent with the habits of most small, cryptically patterned heron species. Prey likely includes small fish, frogs, aquatic insects, and other invertebrates associated with forest floor water bodies. The extreme cryptic patterning suggests that it relies heavily on remaining motionless and blending into the background of leaf litter and fallen branches along the forest floor and stream margins.

Breeding biology is essentially unknown. The species is rarely encountered by ornithologists, and the nest, eggs, and chick plumage had not been formally described for much of the twentieth century. Modern molecular studies confirm its placement within Ardeidae as a unique lineage representing an ancient divergence within the bittern clade.

The Zigzag Heron is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, though this assessment reflects limited data. Its strict dependence on intact Amazonian rainforest makes it inherently vulnerable to the ongoing, rapid deforestation occurring across the Amazon basin. A significant reduction in available habitat may affect populations before the species can be formally reassessed.
