Inhabits dense temperate and boreal mixed forests across Eurasia from western Europe to Japan. Feeds on buds, catkins, seeds, and berries. Least Concern; resident of mature forest; sensitive to fragmentation and clear-cutting, using dense conifer understorey for cover.
