के बारे में

The Malayan Night-Heron (Gorsachius melanolophus), also called the Tiger Bittern or Malaysian Night-Heron, is a medium-sized heron of the family Ardeidae found in South and Southeast Asia. Adults have a distinctive and finely patterned plumage: the upperparts are deep brown and black with fine pale barring or spotting, and the underparts are pale with bold dark brown streaking — a cryptic pattern reminiscent of a tiger's stripes and effective camouflage in the dappled shade of forest understory. The crown is black, the crest is black and can be raised when alarmed, and the facial skin is reddish. The neck sides show chestnut tones with black and white streaking. Total length is 47–51 cm.

The species inhabits dense forest, forested stream margins, forest swamps, and the edges of forested wetlands in tropical and subtropical South and Southeast Asia. Its range extends from the western Himalayas, India, and Sri Lanka east through Myanmar, Thailand, the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java, the Philippines, and southern China. Many populations show partial migratory behavior, with birds moving seasonally in response to rainfall and breeding season. The species is strongly associated with intact or well-developed secondary forest and is rarely found in open or heavily disturbed habitats.

The Malayan Night-Heron is nocturnal and crepuscular, roosting in dense forest by day and foraging actively at night. Diet includes earthworms, land crabs, insects, frogs, lizards, and other small animals, often foraging on the forest floor away from water as well as along stream banks. This terrestrial foraging habit distinguishes it from most herons and is reminiscent of the forest-floor foraging of the tiger-herons. When alarmed it characteristically raises its crest, extends the neck, and adopts a stiff upright posture.

Breeding biology is not comprehensively documented, but nesting is known to occur in dense forest, typically in trees. The species is usually solitary or found in pairs. Clutch sizes of one to two eggs have been reported. The Malayan Night-Heron is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN but is considered uncommon to rare across much of its range, and deforestation of lowland forest in South and Southeast Asia represents the primary long-term threat.
