A small group of feathers on the leading edge of the wing that prevents stalling at low speeds.
Explication détaillée
The alula (Latin: 'small wing') bears typically three small but aerodynamically critical feathers attached to the first digit. By spreading the alula away from the wing surface, a bird creates a slot that delays airflow separation and allows flight at high angles of attack without stalling. This mechanism is homologous to the leading-edge slat of an aircraft and is most prominent in slow-flying species with broad wings such as raptors and vultures.
