Black-rumped Buttonquail (Turnix nanus) is a tiny 13–14 cm buttonquail of sub-Saharan Africa. Pale sandy-buff with dark rufous streaking; distinctive dark rump visible in flight. Inhabits short open grassland and burnt savanna areas across tropical Africa from Senegal east to Ethiopia and south to Tanzania.

Inhabits open grasslands with tussock grass across northern and eastern Australia. Nomadic; tracks seasonal grass growth. Polyandrous with role-reversed sex.
