The rock pigeon is the ancestor of all domestic pigeon breeds and one of the most abundant birds in cities worldwide. Medium dove, 25–27 cm, vinaceous-pinkish grey with a dark brown mantle, narrow black neck collar, and pale underparts. Found in the Sahel zone across West and East Africa from Gambia to Sudan, inhabiting dry savanna, thorn scrub, and farmland. Granivore of grass seeds and cultivated grains. Least Concern.
