About These Birds
Desertas Petrel
34–36 cm. Dark above with grey rump; white belly with dusky flanks and partial breast-band. Breeds only on Deserta Grande, Madeira archipelago; Vulnerable with around 200–250 pairs. Ranges through tropical Atlantic. Threatened by introduced cats; nocturnal at colonies.
Heinroth's Shearwater
27 cm. Small dark shearwater; all sooty-brown with pale bill. Breeds Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea. Critically Endangered; extremely poorly known with only a handful of records. Breeding biology almost completely unknown; one of the rarest and least-studied seabirds.
