Hoary-headed Grebe (Poliocephalus poliocephalus) is a small 27–30 cm grebe endemic to Australia and southern New Guinea. Distinctive pale grey and white head with fine dark streaking giving 'hoary' appearance; chestnut neck sides. Inhabits open freshwater lakes and reservoirs. Highly nomadic, following rain across the arid interior.

Dark brown in breeding plumage with rich chestnut face sides and pale spot at base of bill. Inhabits freshwater lakes, ponds, reservoirs, and slow rivers. Very common across Australia.
