About These Birds

Light-mantled Albatross

Light-mantled Albatross, 79–89 cm, wingspan 183–218 cm, is perhaps the most graceful albatross: dark chocolate head and wings contrasting with pale grey body and back. Breeds on New Zealand sub-Antarctic islands and other Southern Ocean islands. Soars effortlessly in storm winds. Near Threatened.

Wandering Albatross

The wandering albatross has the largest wingspan of any living bird, reaching up to 3.5 meters. These oceanic nomads can circumnavigate the globe, covering over 120,000 km per year using dynamic soaring with minimal wing flapping. Pairs mate for life and may live over 60 years.
