About These Birds

Northern Band-tailed Pigeon

Large, stocky pigeon, 33–38 cm, with purple-brown upperparts, a pale grey head, white half-collar on the nape, and a broad grey tail band. Inhabits montane conifer and mixed forests from British Columbia south through western North America to Nicaragua. Granivore of acorns, pine seeds, and berries. Least Concern; locally migratory.

African Collared-dove

Small dove, 26–29 cm, pale pinkish-grey with a black hindneck collar and white tail corners. Native to arid zones of sub-Saharan Africa from Senegal to Somalia and south to Tanzania. The ancestor of the domesticated Barbary Dove (ring-necked dove). Granivore of grass seeds and small grains in dry savanna, farmland, and desert edge. Least Concern.
