About These Birds

Greater Flamingo

The greater flamingo is the most widespread flamingo species and one of the most recognizable birds in the world. Their pink color comes entirely from carotenoid pigments in their crustacean and algal diet. Flamingos are social birds that breed in enormous colonies sometimes numbering tens of thousands.

Lesser Flamingo

Lesser Flamingo (Phoeniconaias minor) is the world's most numerous flamingo at 80–90 cm. Deep carmine-pink plumage; dark red bill. The smallest flamingo species. Inhabits highly alkaline soda lakes across sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia; core populations at Lake Natron, Tanzania, and Sambhar Lake, India. Filter-feeds on Spirulina cyanobacteria.
