About These Birds

Japanese Quail

A small Phasianidae quail (~95 g) of grassland and cropland in East Asia, migratory between breeding grounds in Siberia and Japan and winter quarters in southern China. Extensively domesticated for egg and meat production. Wild populations are Near Threatened due to hybridisation with domestic strains and hunting.

Painted Francolin

A small Phasianidae francolin (~291 g) of rocky hillsides, scrub, and dry grassland across peninsular India and Sri Lanka. Both sexes are intricately spotted and streaked in rufous and white. Shy; detected by resonant calls. Feeds on seeds and invertebrates on the ground. Least Concern; common locally.
