Brown Skua, 52–64 cm, is a powerful sub-Antarctic predator breeding on islands from the Falklands to New Zealand's subantarctic islands. Dark brown throughout; massive hook-tipped bill. Predates penguin and petrel chicks; piracy and scavenging common. Winters at sea across the Southern Ocean.
Chilean Skua
Chilean Skua, 52–58 cm, is a large, heavily built skua of southernmost South America and Cape Horn islands. Warm reddish-brown tones, pale face. Predator and scavenger at penguin and cormorant colonies; piracy also common. Partially migratory; winters at sea in the Pacific and Atlantic.
