About These Birds

Flesh-footed Shearwater

41–45 cm, wingspan 99–107 cm. All-dark sooty-brown with pale flesh-coloured feet and yellowish bill base. Breeds southern Indian Ocean islands and SW Australia; ranges to North Pacific. Near Threatened; bycatch concern. Feeds on fish and squid; follows fishing vessels.

Newell's Shearwater

33 cm. Dark above; white below with variable dark markings on flanks and vent. Breeds Kauai and possibly other Hawaiian islands. Endangered; threatened by introduced predators, light attraction, and vehicle strikes. Migrates to western Pacific; feeds on fish and squid.
