41–45 cm, wingspan 99–107 cm. All-dark sooty-brown with pale flesh-coloured feet and yellowish bill base. Breeds southern Indian Ocean islands and SW Australia; ranges to North Pacific. Near Threatened; bycatch concern. Feeds on fish and squid; follows fishing vessels.
Fluttering Shearwater
33 cm. Dark brown above; white below; relatively short-tailed. Breeds New Zealand North Island coast; non-breeding range restricted to Tasman Sea and nearby waters. Sedentary compared to most shearwaters; feeds on fish and squid. Near Threatened due to small range.
