The Barred Antshrike is a widespread antbird of the family Thamnophilidae found in forest edges, scrub, and thickets from Mexico through much of South America. Weighing about 27.2g with a wingspan of 14.2cm, the male is boldly barred black and white while the female is rufous with streaked underparts. It feeds on insects and small arthropods in dense vegetation.
