The bird measures 25-29 cm, dark rufous-brown above with black streaking and pale buff mottling, the underparts buff barred with dark brown. It is endemic to the Solomon Islands, hunting insects by night in lowland rainforest and calling with a hollow, resonant note. A remote range and nocturnal habits have kept it among the least known birds in its family, and ecological data remain scarce. Recorded birds average about 188 g with a wingspan near 38 cm. The IUCN Red List classifies the species as Near Threatened.
