A poorly known Phasianidae pheasant of montane forests in peninsular Malaysia. Closely related to the Annamite Crested Argus but considered a separate species; males feature similar spectacularly elongated spotted tail feathers. Solitary and secretive. Diet presumed frugivorous and insectivorous. Near Threatened.

Plumage
Darker than Annamite Crested Argus; blackish-brown with buff ocelli and spotting throughout; long dark tail; white crest streaked black; bare blue-grey facial skin. Sexes similar in patterning.
Habitat & Range
Répartition géographique
Endemic to montane forest in peninsular Malaysia (Pahang, Perak) above 600 m; very rarely observed in the wild.
Diet & Feeding
Ground forager in Malaysian hill forest; eats fallen fruits, seeds, invertebrates, and occasional small vertebrates.

Loud, haunting 'kow-WEE' wailing calls from Peninsular Malaysian hill forest; similar to Annamite Crested Argus but reportedly slightly lower pitched. Poorly documented; alarm a sharp cackle.
