A small, exquisite Phasianidae pheasant (~379 g) endemic to forested slopes of Palawan Island in the Philippines. Males display metallic-green and blue ocelli on tail and wings during courtship. Forages on ground in primary and secondary forest for seeds and invertebrates. Vulnerable from deforestation on Palawan.

Plumage
Male velvety black with iridescent blue-green and violet ocelli on wings and tail; white facial markings; white supercilium and throat. Female dark brown with pale buff face and underparts; few small ocelli.

Endemic to Palawan Island, Philippines; resident of primary and secondary lowland and montane forest.

Forages on Palawan forest floor for seeds, fruits, invertebrates, and small vertebrates; scratches leaf litter.

Chant
Sharp, thin 'kwee-kwee' whistles during display; male fans ocellated tail simultaneously. Contact calls soft clucking between pairs. Alarm is explosive sharp 'kek'. Palawan endemic.
