A medium-sized New World quail (~280 g) of family Odontophoridae, with a rufous forehead and brownish plumage. Inhabits humid lowland and foothill forests on both Pacific and Caribbean slopes of western Colombia and northwestern Ecuador. Forages on the forest floor for seeds and invertebrates. Least Concern; found in Chocó forests but not considered threatened despite regional deforestation.

Dark brown above; forecrown bright rufous-orange contrasting with darker crown and back; bare red eye-ring; underparts brown with buff streaking; throat buff; small crest on nape.
Habitat & Range
Répartition géographique
Resident in the Pacific lowlands and foothills of Ecuador and Colombia. Found in humid forest and forest edges below 1,000 m.

Eats seeds, invertebrates, and small fruits on floor of Pacific slope forests in Ecuador and Colombia.

Loud rolling 'quuh-KWEER' duet with hollow, slightly nasal tone; carries well through humid foothill forest. Soft clucking contact notes exchanged between group members.
