A medium-small Phasianidae francolin (~330 g) of open grassland, scrub, and cultivated areas in southern China and Indochina. Males are boldly patterned black-and-white with chestnut wings. Loud, far-carrying calls are characteristic at dawn. Feeds on seeds, insects, and plant matter. Least Concern; tolerates disturbed habitats.

Male black with white spots forming scaly pattern above; white cheek and throat separated by black collar; chestnut nape; spotted underparts. Female brown with buff spotting; paler below; lacks black collar.

Resident of secondary scrub, dry forest, and farmland in southern China, mainland Southeast Asia, and the Philippines.

Loud, repeated 'ke-WEE-kerek' calls; slightly musical at start then grating. SE Asian grassland species. Alarm is rapid cackle. Pairs call in duet; males call persistently at dawn from exposed perch.
