Die Terminologie zur Altersbestimmung variiert je nach System: Das Humphrey-Parkes-System verwendet Begriffe wie 'erstes Basiskleid', 'zweites Wechselkleid' usw.; das europäische Kalenderjahr-System (1KJ, 2KJ) zählt Jahre ab dem Schlüpfen. Gefiederstadien sind für die Bestimmung von Arten mit verzögerter Gefieder-Reifung (große Möwen, Adler) unverzichtbar, bei denen Vögel 3-5 Jahre benötigen, um das definitive adulte Gefieder zu erreichen.
