Ausführliche Erläuterung
Die Tageslänge (Fotoperiode) ist bei Vögeln das primäre proximate Signal für die saisonale Zeitgebung, da sie das einzige Umweltsignal ist, das den Beginn der Brut- oder Zugzeit über alle Jahre hinweg verlässlich vorhersagt. Die Fotorezeption erfolgt bei Vögeln über die Augen, aber auch über lichtempfindliche Neuronen im Gehirn selbst, die direkt auf die Hypothalamus-Hypophysen-Gonaden-Achse einwirken. Die innere Uhr übersetzt fotoperiodische Informationen in interne Jahresprogramme (zirkannuale Rhythmen), die selbst unter konstanten Lichtbedingungen fortbestehen.
