About These Birds
Pycroft's Petrel
26–28 cm. Small; pale grey above with dark M-mark; white underparts with partial dark collar. Breeds small islands off northern New Zealand (Poor Knights, Hen & Chickens). Vulnerable; migrates to North Pacific. Feeds on squid and fish; nocturnal at colonies; threatened by rats.
Heinroth's Shearwater
27 cm. Small dark shearwater; all sooty-brown with pale bill. Breeds Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea. Critically Endangered; extremely poorly known with only a handful of records. Breeding biology almost completely unknown; one of the rarest and least-studied seabirds.
