Der Japanbrillenvogel ist in ganz Ostasien ein vertrauter Gartenvogel und wird in Japan, wo er „Mejiro“ genannt wird, besonders geschätzt. Diese geselligen Vögel bilden außerhalb der Brutzeit Schwärme und sind wichtige Bestäuber von Pflaumen- und Kirschblüten. Auf Hawaii eingeführte Populationen sind allerdings invasiv geworden und konkurrieren dort mit einheimischen Kleidervögeln.

Weighing about 29.75g with a wingspan of 14.9cm, it differs from other white-eyes by lacking the typical prominent white eye-ring. It forages through forest canopy and scrub, feeding on nectar, small insects, and berries.
